As most Tolkien enthusiasts know January 3rd would have been J.R.R. Tolkien’s 123rd birthday — or, as Tolkien would have us put it, his twelvety-third birthday. To honor and celebrate The Professor, Tolkien fans around the world toasted the brilliant creator of Middle-earth (my Tolkien-Birthday-Toast photo is below).
If you are a super fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, below are a few ideas of what you can do to celebrate Tolkien’s twelvety-third birthday throughout 2015. Will you join me in doing a least two of them?
Journey farther into the brilliant mind of Tolkien by reading The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien.
Read Humphrey Carpenter’s authorized J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biography.
Read Tolkien’s poetry in The Road Goes Ever On: A Song Cycles.
Pick up and read Meditations on Middle-earth edited by Karen Haber.
If you can find an affordable copy (it won’t be easy!), dive into Jim Allan’s Introduction to Elvish.
So that Tolkien is not forgotten now that The Hobbit movies are over, share a favorite Tolkien quotation once a week on Twitter. Find plenty of them here to get you started and keep you going.
If you have any other “precious” suggestions, please share them with us in the comment section.
